Oracle Open Source ODBC Driver Project Page

What:

• EasySoft Open Source ODBC Driver for Oracle. Not yet fully functional. Depending on your needs and resources it may be easier to buy Easysofts' commercial driver than to implement the functionality you require here. If you do make changes please send them back (to me) for incorporation into the source tree.
• README that came with the project from Easysoft.
• TODO that came with the project from Easysoft. Not all of this is important to the project I am doing this for, LOBS and/or LONG support is.

  Done so far from the TODO List:

  • Transaction support.
  • The bulk insert API calls do insert data. (New 2/12/03) I realized this was buggy after looking at the actual table in the database, it was putting in NULLS where it shouldnt. I have made some fixes, its still not quite right. See test/insert2.c bulk inserts numbers OK but not character strings.
• Lxr browsable source tree. "Use the source, Luke. The source.."

Why:

• Easysoft dropped development of the project and pulled it from their web site.
• The Minos project needs an open source oracle driver
• This is an interesting project to me, I am learning a lot about GNU-style autotools, the Oracle OCI, and the ODBC specification.
• This project can potentially benefit many besides the people who are funding it.

• To build the code:
  • Prerequisites: ODBC Driver Manager (like unixODBC) and Oracle Client libraries and headers. Tested and works with oracle 8.0.5, 8.1.6, 8.1.7 on Red Hat Linux 6.2 and 7.1 for Intel. To get to work for 8.1.6 and 8.1.7 you (used to) have to set the environment variable LD_PRELOAD to $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libclntsh.so or you would get a core dump on program exit. This has been fixed.
  • Build just like any other GNU style open source project with autotools, i.e. cd oracle_odbc_driver; ./configure, gmake, gmake check, gmake install. The configure script will complain and die if it can't find ODBC or ORACLE headers and libraries, it accepts commands like --with-unixODBC=$some_directory.
  • See the script oracle_odbc_driver/test/check_oracle_environment for all the environment setup that must precede a successful 'gmake check' In particular, you must have an ODBC.ini and odbcinst.ini file in a location pointed to by the $ODBCSYSINI environment variable, a .ODBC.ini file in your $HOME directory and environment variables set so that sqlplus $ORACLE_USER/$ORACLE_PSWD@$TWO_TASK connects to oracle.

• Development Log I will be 'done' as far as my management is concerned when the Minos project can use RDBC and this driver to perform all their database operations and RDBC exampleson an Oracle database.
